This is what led me to wanting to help those who are in the position I was once in. Here are a few of the truths that I found to becoming an event planner, as well as tips I wish I would have known.
To What Degree?

Many of you might be wondering where do I go to learn to become an event planner? Do I have to take the risks of learning on my own through experience alone? I bet you have to know Someone or it costs a lot! The answer is NO, this is one of the many exciting reasons to become an event planner!
One of the numerous perks of being an Event Planner is that you don't have to spend countless hours and thousands of dollars to get a degree to become one. You can learn more from taking online event planning courses with help through real event planners. The Bright-side of this is it costs less and you can learn faster. One of these amazing courses that helped me is called The Party Planner Academy!
Experience is Your Friend

I know you're thinking how is this going to work, what do I have to do? What are some of the tips that have helped you along the way? What is the advise you wish you had gotten when you were starting out as an event planner?
One of the most beneficial things in starting as an event planner is by helping out with different events. There are many event planners that are willing to pay or even have you help for free, it's worth it! This will help you gain real experience and get great connections. Do a few events for free, see how it's ran from behind the scenes.
Once you've marketed and built a relationship with an event planner ask for mentorship. Learn how to find clients, write a proposal, and remember to always show vendors appreciation. Everyone has to start somewhere so why not start with those who have already put in the work, done the steps necessary in your area, and is willing to help.
The Importance of Research in Event Planning

Like all those who are truly interested in a topic or idea this is obvious; do your research. I can't say this one enough, if you are wanting to know more about anything, like finding new ideas, different events, groups, or whatever it may be, do your research!
If you're struggling in taking that first step, research and look over different event planners that have blogs or websites to help you along your way! Use the internet to your advantage, everyone knows about Pinterest and might love it as much as I do. If you do then you're in luck because there are many great and easy ways to make your events pop!
Put Your Skills to the Test

If you have taken my advise and the advise of many before me you have probably looked for other event planners to work with, or under, to help you along your way. If yes that's great, you probably have a lot of experience and a greater knowledge of what it takes. This will work in your favor.
After you gained experience and have built a resume start applying for event planning jobs or opportunities. Go in person to introduce yourself and show your work.
Finding your own clients can be difficult, make a pamphlet of all your events and present it to potential clients or even event centers. Once you've found your niche try to find different companies that are interested in what you have to offer. Corporate clients are likely to become yearly clients with common events like holiday parties.
Show Your Talent

One of the best part about being an event planner is that you're the boss. You can do whatever types of events you want, because of this you will probably find that the funnest events to work for is yourself. Why not promote yourself and your business? This is a great promotional and marketing tool.
First network, make connections and throw events for those people. Your niche or marketing is what makes your events unique. This is a great opportunity to get clients and show your talent.
